Essay on Influence of television on our life In English
20th century is a century of scientific investigations and their application by technology. With the onset of the age of electronics, television, T.V. as it is commonly called, a wonderchild of science, appeared almost in every house. Now-a-days it has become a part and parcel of our daily life for its varied purposes.
First and foremost is its use as an aid of entertainment. Daily it serves a feast of programmes like songs and scenes from the movies, music concerts and folk-dances, scenes from nature, sport-events, fashion shows and what not. It entertains the whole family at a time in a very relaxed manner.
There are many serials running for days together like Surabhi, Chandrakanta, Shanti, Junoon etc. These programmes on this small screen give us amusement and a lot of information about advancements in filming technology, art and architecture, people and places, bird and animal life. There
are programmes like Turning Point', 'Living On The Edge' which add much to our knowledge of science, scientific inventions and nature. The programmes like 'Parakh', 'World This Week' and the timely 'News Telecast' make us aware of the phenomena in political, economic and cultural fields in India as well as all over the world.
The programmes like 'Hallow Zindagi' give us an altogether different awareness about the social and various other problems in India. Above all these, there are live-telecasts of many events like sports, talks, riots, natural calamities, space shuttles which give a live and thrilling experience.
Television is used in the field of education also. Almost in every country on the globe it is used for teaching purposes. It is used to give military training; it is used to teach computor mechanism. The exercise programmes like yoga, aerobics give guidance to improve health.
There are many quiz contests for students which increase one's general knowledge. There are agricultural programmes like interviews of experts which guide the farmers.
Television has proved itself to be a good medium for advertisements. The companies propagate their products like mediciens, cosmetics, food-products, washing machines, clothes, bulbs, mixers, refrigerators and what not.
They impress their product on the watchers through colourful and effective advertisements and get the market for their sale. In a nutshell, television as a mass-media is proving wonderful source of entertainment and eduction.
But mind well, it is one side of the coin. Along with its benefits the television has many drawbacks. Observing television for hours together is proved injurious to health and hygine. Watching it from a closer distance is harmful to eyes due to the various rays emitted from its picture-tube.
Sitting in front of it for long makes the watcher idle and brings fatigue to his eyes, brain and spinal cord. Now-a-days watching T.V. programmes has become a kind of addiction or a craze. The workers take without pay or casual leaves and sit home idly watching cricket matches.
There are people who never miss any part of their favourite serial at any cost. It's a calamity for them if the T.V. is closed for a day. And what about children? The observations of a survey made by some American psychologist about 'watching T.V. among children' are shocking.
Eighty percent of school-children regularly watch T.V. It is one of their major programmes. Similar will be the findings if such a survey is made in India. Instead of reading at leisure, school-children prefer watching T.V. programmes like movies, advertisements etc. for recreation.
Instead of reciting school-rhymes they learn movie-songs and advertise-songs by heart. They are reluctant to study. Grownups also are not an exception. They get so much involved in watching television that they forget to accord a warm welcome to a visitor at the door.
What about the college yough? T.V. has altogether changed their attitude towards life. it seems shallow without any firm foundation of faith. Their values are changed; their style of living has changed. Like a pin sticking to a magnet young girls and boys are stuck to the television to watch various movie-programmes.
Thus, this idiot-box has made its watchers really idiot. What educational purposes it serves and to what extent is a matter of research. But one thing is true and it cannot be neglected, too that the cheap-standard programmes broadcast by new channels daily coming up have taken the young generation to an edge of ruin. Return from there is in our own hand.
