Science is a Boon or Bane Essay English
Nature has bestowed 'intelligence and rational thinking on man. Man has been using them in constant persuit of truth and happiness. From this persuit science and techology are born. This is the age when both go hand in hand. Science provided base and direction to technology and made tremendous dazzeling progress.
It is making life cosy and comfortable. Day by day it is opening new vistas. Man just switches on a button and illumination is there. It is electricity which has removed darkness in human life and brought all comforts.
Sit in an armchair and hear music on a radio or watch television enjoying sips of cool juices from the refrigerator. Just loosen a tap of a shower and enjoy bath of warm water. Just dial some numbers and communicate with your friend or a relative in any corner of the world.
Catch an aeroplane and reach the other end of the world within a few hours. Just take one pill and keep the disease and pains away. These are wonders of science in our day-to-day life. In addition there are new medicines and surgical instruments. There is industry and mechanisation. There are computors in every field.
There are eletronic equipments. There is a mass-production of useful commodities. In a nutshell, man workes and lives with science. It is harnessed with human life. True, science is a boon for mankind. But this is one side of the coin. The darker side of science is tragic and gloomy.
Nuclear development has brought man to an edge of doom. Scientists discovered atomic power which is proving itself to be a demon. It is threatening the world with its devastating power. Countries on the globe are spending crores of their currency in preparing atom bombs like cobalt bomb, hydrogen bomb, flying bombs and missiles.
Explosion of one atom bomb is capable of turning entire humanity to ashes. It causes incalculable loss of life and property. Still the nations have ambition for power. Other weapons like guns, granades, missiles are used to kill the innocents. It is tragic.
Apart from these national problems, science has croatod havoc in man's day-to-day life. The 'electronics' was discovered and came the calculators and computers. Now-a-days calculators are used to make simple calculations like additions and multiplications.
If it continues for years together through the generations to come, man's brain-faculty to do calculations will be extinct. In this age of computerised mechanization, many hands are replaced by a single machine. It has given rise to a great problem of unemployment. Growing industries pose another problem.
Vast amount of industrial waste like acidic chemicals, gases, smoke drained in water and air have endangered the flora and the fauna on the globe due to pollution
Science has endangered human rational thought. Comforts of science have made man mechanical and materialistic in his outlook. Man has lost his spiritual and religious beliefs in God which are the very base and support of his life.
Science has thrown religion into the background. It has shaken the values and sentiments like truth, love, affection. Man has become cold and calculating in nature. Philosophy, art and culture are rapidly diminishing from man's life.
Man is losing his essence. He has become the cog in the machine. The speed of modern life is getting in his nerves. Man is enjoying idle comforts at the cost of his physical and mental fitness. Science is dehumanizing humanity.
So, is science making man happy? Should it be called a boon or a bane? Opinion remains divided on these questions, because science in itself cannot be a blessing or a curse. It is a power which is blind and has no preferences. Depending upon the user it can work either way, for good or for evil. If used for evil, it will devour humanity; if used for good, it will bring delights to humanity. Its use will make man's life a tragidy or a comedy.
