Essay on Science- Its Advantages and Disadvantages
In today's highly competitive world, science and its inventions play a major role. The last hundred years have witnessed a tremendous change in life owing to the technology developed by science. Science has given us many gifts to make our home life more comfortable.
We have now ceiling fans and refrigerators. The mixer, washing machine and the microwave oven have taken the drudgery out of housework. We have readymade preserved mixes and powders which make cooking easier. Tinned and canned foodstuffs help us to prepare meals in no time.
In the field of medicine, X-ray machines, lasers, heart-lung machine and the like have made things easier for the doctor as well as for the patient. Drugs like penicillin and antibiotics keep diseases under control.
Today, man lives a comparatively pain free and longer life than his ancestors. Transplantation of organs is now possible, and our body can be of use for medical research even after death.
We can travel far and wide due to inventions like the train, the steamer and the airplane. The communication system of the world has improved tremendously, and, seated comfortably in our own homes, we get to know the news of happenings all over the world merely by pressing a couple of buttons.
These are all the advantages of science. But as there are two sides to every coin, science has its disadvantages too. Though computers are a great help to us, computerization has created problems in overpopulated countries like India, as many people have become unemployed.
Rapid industrialization has increased the air pollution levels, which in extreme cases may even lead to sudden death, as in the case of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy. Loudspeakers and stereo systems lead to noise pollution.
Chemical fertilizers and pesticides have destroyed the fertility of the soil, and affected the seeds and grains we consume. And how can one forget the destruction caused by the atom bomb during the Second World War? The atom bomb, too, is the creation of science, and one of the deadliest and the worst.
Thus, science has its advantages as well as its disadvantages. Much, therefore depends on how science is put to use. If used for human welfare, science can certainly create a heaven on earth. But if used wrongly or for destructive purposes, it can harm us and may even destroy the entire mankind.
