Everybody wants to be a doctor or an engineer or a chartered accountant. But my ambition is distinct. I want to be the Chief Minister of my state. I have even given serious thought as to what I would do if my ambition is fulfilled.
My first task as a Chief Minister would be to look after the poor of my state. The economically backward and unfortunate members of society would be provided with food and clothing at subsidized rates through a chain of fair-priced shops, and low cost houses through the housing department.
My next important task would be to provide jobs to the unemployed people who are deserving and needy. I would also see that my courts are absolutely fair to everybody, whatever their caste or creed, or their economic status, and immediate justice would be dispensed to everybody.
Corruption has always been a problem in free India. I would see that corrupt officials are severely punished, and do everything I could to discourage corruption.Whenever possible, I would try to meet my people, especially those who are very poor, and try to find out their problems.
I would always keep my doors open to anyone who wants to meet me. If I were the Chief Minister, I would ban all extravagant parties and functions. How could a poor state like mine afford them? Simplicity would be the watchword for me and my cabinet colleagues.
I would examine the administrative set-up and improve it wherever possible, so that its functioning is quick and smooth. No one would have to wait long to get any government work done. I would reshuffle and streamline all government procedures to make them as easy as possible for the masses.
The people working in the government offices would be held responsible for whatever happens in their departments. Those who work sincerely and honestly will be rewarded; lethargy and negligence will be punished.
Lastly, as Chief Minister, I would lead by example in honesty, sincerity and concern for my people, and I would expect others, especially my ministers and important officials, to follow suit. I believe that with strong leadership my state would be one of the best in the country. I hope with all my heart that I get to be that strong leader some day.
