Essay on “Indian Expedition To Antarctica” Complete
We had very less information about Antarctica and South Pole around 150 years back. Man has been exploring land, ocean and space since ages. Naturally these frozen regions of the earth attracted him.
Caption James Cook was the first person to visit the Antarctic region in seventeenth century followed by a series of expeditions by several persons. This entire region is a surprise in itself. It is ice-bound and un- inhibited. Everything here is huge and extensive; let it be ice, loneliness, natural beauty, cold or anything.
98% of this area is covered with ice. The Antarctic Ocean surrounding this area freezes in winter and the area gets converted into a vast stretch of ice. If this ice melts, the level of all the oceans will increase by more than 60 meters.
The temperature sometimes drops down to -88° C. There is night for six months continuously. The sun shines continuously for next six months. The region is free from pollution. The air is fresh and wholesome. Penguins and about twelve species of birds are found here. The frozen sea has variety of fishes and other species.
The region is very important from the point of scientific research, discoveries and because of the enormous amount of minerals and ocean wealth. Many countries have established their research centers in this area. India is one of them.
The first 21 member team of Indian scientists landed here in 1982. Many important meteorological observations and other research were carried out. Now, every year number of teams of researchers and scientists visit this place and collect data that help in the studies in meteorology, oceanology, glaciology, geology etc.
The first Indian team established a permanent base called 'Daxin Gangotri' here. After a short period, a second research station, 'Maitree' was established. All the Indian expeditions to Antarctica have been successful.
The entire project is aimed at a long term benefit. They are important for the understanding of the atmosphere of earth, the water and oceanic pollution and to find out the solutions for these problems. The Antarctic region has great riches.
The Antarctic Ocean is supposed to be the unlimited source of mineral wealth. Its atmosphere has tremendous effects on seasons. It affects the monsoon condition in India. Therefore, India is keenly interested in carrying out research in this area. Antarctica will definitely play an important role in understanding the yet unclear past of earth.
