The trend of Olympic Games started in 1876 by a French educationist Coubertin at Athens in Greece. Since then the games are organized every four years. More than 10,000 sportsperson and around 200 countries participate in this event.
The games have been organized in almost all important cities in the world. Several events are organized in the Olympic Games. Opening ceremony is performed at a grand scale. It starts by lighting the Olympic Flame followed by eye-catching entertainment programmes.
All the participants take part in the majestic parade with their respective national flags. A huge crowd of spectators gather to witness the inauguration function and the competitions that follow. The event lasts for almost two weeks.
The main aim of holding these games is to invoke the feeling of equality, harmony and brotherhood and to bring the nations together. The symbol is the Olympic Rings. These five intertwined rings represent the unity of five inhabited continents. The official Olympic Motto is a Latin phrase meaning "Swifter, Higher, Stronger".
The Olympic Games as we know them today have a long history that dates back to antiquity. It all started in Greece, some 3,000 years ago. At that time, the games were being held every four years at the foot steps of Mount Olympus in Greece.
Hence they are named as Olympics. Greece was the most prosperous country at that time. The Greeks were very fond of various art forms and sports. Initially only running races were conducted but later on many other games were included. It was considered as
a big festive occasion in Greece. The games used to begin by performing rituals and offerings to god. On the fifth day, prizes were distributed and pigeons carrying the names of the winners were released in all directions to publicize their names.
The winners were considered as god and their effigies were erected in the city. Later, when Greece was invaded by the Romans, these competitions were banned in their regime. It took almost 1500 years to restart these sports. Today, Olympic Games symbolize the sense of humanity, brotherhood, and unity among people of different countries.
Olympic Game event has its own flag, its own slogan. Several countries compete to organize the Olympics in their countries. In 2008 the event will be held in China. The organizer country starts its preparations on a grand scale.
Arrangements are done on a large scale. Huge amount of money is spent. But the host also gets benefited by organizing the event. It gathers huge amount of foreign currency through the games.
