Women Education in India Essay
In fact, this topic is not even worth discussion. Women have inherent right to get everything that men get. Since ancient times, the Indian society has remained male predominant. They wanted someone to serve them, to follow their orders like slaves and there could be no one better than a female partner.
She will be more obedient provided she is left illiterate and dependant. This was the simple logic. Many ancient books also supported this theme. Very few women were literate but huge majority was refused education and equal rights, equal justice.
This situation prevailed for many thousand years. About 150 years earlier change started occurring when Maharshi Shide, Mahatma Phule, Savitribai Phule, Maharshi Karve, Agarkar and many social reformers agitated against this injustice to women.
They started schools for girls and arranged public meetings wherein women's side was pleaded strongly. Fortunately there was good number of males who wanted change. They had no bias mind as far as gender was concerned. Reformers gained good grounds and education field was opened to the women. Women progressed in different fields and they showed their merits. In many competitions they superseded their male opponents. Number of parents interested in their daughter's
education increasing. During last 100 years the picture changed for good. In many school and colleges an equal number of both sex is seen. If we take account, we may note that today many important offices are headed by women.
Late prime minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi, Mrs. Kiran Bedi, Indian president Mrs. Patil are few to note. Vijayalakshmi Pandit was the first women who headed UNO. All banks, colleges, schools, corporate sections, private and semi-private offices, I.T. offices are flooded with women.
Now nobody dares to underestimate them. However, this encouraging picture is restricted to urban area. In villages and small towns still women education is restricted to at the most primary level. Government policy no doubt is encouraging education to girls by way of different scholarships. There will be much improved and better picture in the near future.
Education is helpful for women in many ways. An educated woman is a bridge between society and the country. She can face every situation courageously and confidently. Her thinking ability increases. Children are greatly influence by their mothers.
So if the mother is educated and cultured, the next generation is going to be cultured ideal citizens of the country. It is very important for women to be financially independent in todays world. Her education proves to be helpful for her in case of difficult situation.
Educated women know how to behave in the society. They are practical and can solve problems easily. Thus women education is very crucial in the overall progress of a country.
